Meet Our ASCEND Ambassador 2026

Ehani Hunter

Hi, I’m Ehani Hunter. I currently work as a veterinary assistant while pursuing my goal of becoming a veterinarian. I’m a strong advocate for low-cost and affordable veterinary care and am passionate about working within my local community to educate pet owners on preventative care and provide accessible services.

I joined the ASCEND mentorship group to find community and guidance from people who look like me and share my interests and goals. As a woman of color in veterinary medicine, the field can feel intimidating and isolating, so being part of a group that shares the same love for animals and medicine has been incredibly meaningful. This community has not only been rewarding but has also strengthened my commitment to the field.

Through this mentorship, I have gained the confidence to try new things and take risks I might not have considered before, thanks to the encouragement and support of Dr. Boyd and fellow mentees.

When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, hanging out with my two dogs, Rajah (Brindle) and Bellatrix, and relaxing through DIY crafts, baking, and being outdoors.

As an ASCEND Veterinary Mentor Ambassador, I hope to continue supporting my fellow mentees and fostering a space where everyone feels engaged and connected.

Ariyonna Johnson

Hi my name is Ariyonna Johnson. I currently work at a medical facility as a Patient Care Coordinator. I was recently a Veterinary receptionist, and I am on my journey to becoming a Veterinarian. My focus relies on resources and networking. I was born and raised in the small city of Hopkinsville,Ky. There are not many opportunities here as a young black woman trying to get experience in the veterinary industry. Most of my experience has come from my studies in undergrad and traveling. I see first hand the struggles we face to get into the spaces we belong in.

I was first introduced to Dr.Boyd from a professor at my alma mater. Dr.Boyd then informed me about her mentor group, ASCEND. I was overly excited as this was exactly what I was looking for. I was more than appreciative to have a Black Veterinarian take me under her wing. The community has been everything I imagined and more. I have gained numerous networking connections as well as clinical hours and shadowing opportunities. I am building bonds and friendships while exceeding my veterinary knowledge. Dr.Boyd along with the other members of the group really push me to think outside the box and be more audacious.

This community has given me more support than I realized I needed. I truly believe this group is not only causing me to grow as a person but I am growing as a professional as well. Dr.Boyd goes above and beyond for us, and she will for you too.

In my spare time I enjoy swimming, shopping, and binge watching tv. I take my dog everywhere with me, her name is Chanel.

As an ASCEND Veterinary Mentor Ambassador, I hope to be of aid in the succession of the group. I look forward to supporting my peers as they have supported me and creating a space for us all to be audacious. :)
