Lack of Awareness of Veterinary Medicine as an Option
Growing up, I always had a connection with animals, but it wasn’t until I was in undergrad (yup- an adult!) that I realized I could turn that passion into a career. This lack of early awareness is a significant barrier. Many young people, especially from marginalized communities, simply aren’t exposed to the idea that veterinary medicine is a viable and rewarding career path.

Lack of Adequate Representation
When I toured around at the various well-known veterinary schools, there were very few people who looked like me on the walls of successful, esteemed graduates. Representation matters immensely. Without seeing diverse role models in the field, it's hard for young people of color to envision themselves in those roles.

Financial Resources for School and Developing Interest
Veterinary school is expensive, and the financial burden can deter many talented individuals from pursuing this path. Scholarships and financial aid are crucial, but they are not always sufficient or accessible to those who need them the most. And loans are not the answer! Generational wealth and access to resources are not the same for diverse populations.

Cultural Differences
Cultural differences can also play a role. In some communities, there may be less emphasis on or familiarity with animal care professions. Breaking down these cultural barriers and educating families about the importance and possibilities within veterinary medicine is essential.

Lack of Recruitment in US Veterinary Colleges
US veterinary colleges often lack targeted recruitment efforts to attract students from diverse backgrounds. More proactive outreach and support programs can help bridge this gap and create a more inclusive environment.
My Personal Journey
Reflecting on my own journey, I realize how fortunate I was to have mentors and opportunities that guided me toward veterinary medicine. But it wasn’t an easy path, and I know many others face even more significant obstacles. That's why I am passionate about initiatives that strive to create a more inclusive and diverse veterinary profession.
Increasing diversity in veterinary medicine isn’t just about numbers; it’s about enriching the field with varied perspectives, experiences, and ideas that ultimately lead to better care for our animal companions and the people who deeply love them.
I've witnessed firsthand the sigh of relief that minority families feel when they realize I’m their veterinarian. This immediate trust and comfort highlight the profound impact that diversity can have on patient care and client relationships. We need diversity in our profession not only to reflect the communities we serve but also to learn from each other and improve our cultural competence and sensitivity.
There are amazing organizations out there supporting these initiatives and diverse veterinary students, such as the Multicultural Veterinary Medical Association (MCVMA), the National Association of Black Veterinarians, Black DVM Network, VOICE, Natives in Vet Med, Diversify Vet Med, and others. Their work is crucial in paving the way for future generations of veterinarians from all backgrounds.
I am committed to continuing this important work and fostering a community where everyone feels they belong.
